Sagittarius: Traits and Personality

Sagittarius is the zodiac's explorer. The Sun moves through Sagittarius from about November 22 to December 21, the last weeks of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, when the year looks ahead to its turning point. A mutable fire sign ruled by Jupiter, Sagittarius is optimistic, curious and always looking beyond the horizon, whether that means travel, study or a new idea about how life works.

The symbol of Sagittarius is the archer, often drawn as a centaur aiming an arrow at a distant target. Astrology describes Sagittarius as honest, generous and freedom-loving, with a big sense of humor and an even bigger sense of possibility.

Strengths

• Optimism. Sagittarius sees the opportunity in a setback and lifts the mood of those around it.
• Honesty. Sagittarius tells the truth as it sees it, often with a laugh.
• Curiosity. Books, countries, beliefs, people: Sagittarius wants to understand them all.
• Generosity. Sagittarius shares its time, knowledge and enthusiasm freely.
• Sense of adventure. Sagittarius says yes to the unfamiliar and makes it fun.

Weaknesses

• Tactlessness. Honest words can land harder than Sagittarius intended.
• Restlessness. Routine and limits can make Sagittarius feel trapped.
• Overpromising. Big enthusiasm can mean saying yes to more than it can deliver.
• Avoiding commitment. Keeping every option open can leave others unsure where they stand.

Sagittarius in love

Sagittarius wants love to feel like an adventure shared: a partner who is also a friend, a travel companion and a good sparring partner in conversation. It is warm, playful and generous, and it values honesty over romance on script. Jealousy and control are the fastest way to lose a Sagittarius; trust and freedom keep it close.

The lesson for Sagittarius in relationships is that commitment and freedom are not opposites. Being dependable in small things makes the big adventures possible.

Sagittarius at work

Sagittarius does well in work that involves learning, travel, ideas or people from different backgrounds: teaching, publishing, law, tourism, international business, sport, media and entrepreneurship. It inspires others with a vision and brings energy to new ventures.

Micromanagement and repetitive tasks are hard for Sagittarius. It thrives with independence, variety and a mission it believes in.

Sagittarius compatibility

Astrological compatibility starts with the elements and the distance between two signs. These are the traditional pairings for Sagittarius; any real relationship depends on the two people in it.

• Sagittarius and Aries: a lively fire match, adventurous, honest and full of laughter.
• Sagittarius and Taurus: the open road meets home. It works when freedom and stability both get room.
• Sagittarius and Gemini: opposite signs, both curious and freedom-loving. Endless conversation, and a need to settle down sometimes.
• Sagittarius and Cancer: horizon meets home. Cancer needs commitment, Sagittarius needs space; patience helps.
• Sagittarius and Leo: a joyful fire pairing of warmth, fun and shared enthusiasm.
• Sagittarius and Virgo: a square of mutable signs: big picture meets detail. Stimulating, if both value the other's view.
• Sagittarius and Libra: sociable and optimistic, a pair that loves culture, travel and people.
• Sagittarius and Scorpio: neighbors with opposite styles, openness and privacy. Honest talk builds trust.
• Sagittarius and Capricorn: neighbors with different speeds: vision meets strategy. Together they can go far.
• Sagittarius and Aquarius: two independent spirits who share ideals and a love of new ideas.
• Sagittarius and Pisces: a square of two dreamers, both traditionally ruled by Jupiter. Inspiring, and in need of a plan.
