How zodiac compatibility works
Astrological compatibility between two signs starts with two things: their elements and the distance between them on the zodiac wheel.
- Same element (signs four apart, a trine): fire with fire, earth with earth and so on. An easy, natural understanding.
- Supportive elements (signs two apart, a sextile): fire with air, earth with water. Friendly and encouraging.
- Opposite signs (six apart): a strong attraction between two sides of the same question, such as independence and partnership.
- Squares (three apart): two signs of the same modality with clashing elements. Friction, and a lot of energy.
- Neighbors and near-opposites (one or five apart): signs with little in common that need adjustment and curiosity.
Sun signs are only a starting point: in astrology a full picture would include the Moon, Venus, Mars and the rising sign of both people. And no chart decides a relationship; the people in it do. Each sign profile lists how that sign traditionally gets along with all the others.
