Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable Signs

Besides an element, every sign has a modality, also called a quality: cardinal, fixed or mutable. Where the element describes a sign's temperament, the modality describes how it moves through a situation: starting it, sustaining it or adapting it. Each modality has four signs, one of each element, and together they follow the rhythm of the seasons.

Cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

Cardinal signs begin the seasons. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun enters Aries at the start of spring, Cancer at the start of summer, Libra at the start of autumn and Capricorn at the start of winter. Cardinal signs are initiators: they see what needs to happen and set it in motion, each in the style of its element.

Their strength is leadership and drive. Their challenge is follow-through: once something is launched, they may already be looking for the next thing to start.

Fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

Fixed signs fall in the middle of each season, when it is at its fullest. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are the builders and keepers of the zodiac: loyal, persistent and hard to move once they have decided.

Their strength is staying power, which lets them finish what others abandon. Their challenge is change: they can hold on to a plan, an opinion or a grudge after it has stopped serving them.

Mutable signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

Mutable signs close each season and prepare for the next. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are flexible, curious and good at adjusting a plan to real life.

Their strength is adaptability, which makes them good mediators, editors and problem-solvers. Their challenge is focus: they can scatter their energy or change course too easily.

How the modalities work together

Signs of the same modality are either opposite each other or a quarter of the zodiac apart. Astrology calls these links oppositions and squares, and they bring attraction together with friction: two cardinal signs both want to lead, two fixed signs both refuse to yield, and two mutable signs can drift together without deciding anything. Signs of different modalities often complement each other, with one starting, another sustaining and a third adapting.

A group or a project, the tradition says, runs best with all three: someone to start it, someone to keep it going and someone to adapt it when plans change.
